A storage project is a fifteen-year asset bought through a day-one procurement process, and the architecture chosen at that moment determines almost everything that follows. Systems that manage their batteries as a single block age at the pace of their worst modules, so by year four the projects that hold up and the ones that get written down were usually decided long before commissioning.

Project cost splits between the batteries themselves and everything required to make those batteries usable. As battery prices fall, the power electronics become a larger share of the total, and that is the layer almost nobody has touched.

What Year Four Actually Looks Like

Managing each module independently means modules degrade at their own rates without dragging the system down. The system also knows what capacity it actually has as it ages, and it weighs the cost of wear against what the energy is worth in the moment, so degradation gets managed rather than absorbed.

That changes what augmentation costs you. Adding capacity uses whatever battery is available at the time instead of whatever matches the original build, and units are hot-swappable without taking the system offline, so the asset you commissioned in year one is still the asset you own in year ten.
